At the thefanlistings.org I noticed that Susan Pevensie had been removed from the network. Susan is my favorite Chronicles of Narnia character and I immediately applied.
Susan Pevensie is introduced to readers in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, which is the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. She is a young girl who becomes the Queen of Narnia, known as Queen Susan the Gentle. She shows bravery and is a wicked shot with a bow. She is also the voice of caution, she doesn't like to take put herself or her siblings in danger without cause.
We see Susan again in the second book of the series where she is once again taken into Narnia for an adventure. She does have her moment of weakness where she doubts Lucy, her sister, after Lucy claims to have seen Aslan, who is the equivalent of God in the series. Aslan soon restores Susan's faith with his breath and the moment of weakness passes. She is once again the brave and beautiful girl we were introduced to in the first book.
We hear of Susan briefly in other books but it is not until the last book of the series, The Last Battle, that the reader is shocked to learn that Susan will not be returning, at least not in the book. Peter, her brother, describes her as no longer being a friend to Narnia and Jill Pole says, "she's interested in nothing now-a-days except nylons and lipstick and invitations". Eustace Scrubb reports that she says of Narnia, "What wonderful memories you have! Fancy you're still thinking about all those funny games we used to play when we were children." It is grievous to Susan fans to learn that their favorite heroine in the series has become a supposedly silly, vapid woman with no care other than society.
Yet there still are Susan fans who hope that it was not all cut clear and dry, despite what C.S. Lewis has said. There are many works of fanfiction out there where Susan distances herself from Narnia to protect herself from feelings of disappointment that she will not be able to return rather than something more shallow. Despite what is canon I feel Susan was much more than what she is made out to be in the ending book, she was practical but she always had heart. Susan was always much more than the nylon and lipstick girl she turned out to be and there is the hope that she makes it back to Narnia and Aslan.
My personal feelings were that a character had to be used as an example and poor Susan was chosen. She had already had her moment of doubt, why not stop believing altogether? I have great respect for C.S. Lewis but I feel for poor Susan. She may have become silly and vapid - his words - but did she deserve to have all her family taken in one blow? I think not.
